The goal isn't to eliminate all of your trees, but instead to create the best plan to reduce the excess fuel around your home that allows fire to spread unchecked.

How We Create Space

On a recent project, our crew focused on creating defensible space without sacrificing the natural beauty of the property. Dense cedar was established between and underneath some oaks on the property. This is a great example of a "ladder fuel", which creates a continuous fuel source from a fire on the ground up into the canopy of the trees around it. As you can imagine, a continuous line of fuel from the ground to the height of your roof is exactly what you want to avoid.

To reduce that risk, we:

• Removed dense, dead cedar beneath and around mature oaks

• Raised the canopy on any tree that stayed on the property- both cedar and oaks

• Chipped all brush on-site for use in other projects

• Improved canopy spacing by thinning the remaining trees

  
  

Now this property has been lifted and tidied, and the result is land that is better prepared for wildfire and also looks excellent! Fire Mitigation Evaluation

Effective fire mitigation starts with understanding your property and creating a plan that addresses the areas with the greatest wildfire risk. We generally recommend thinking about addressing the spaces closest to your home first and expanding outward. The immediate zone around the home (0–5 feet) focuses on reducing combustible materials near structures- this includes overhanging limbs and overgrown shrubs against the house. Slightly farther out, in the intermediate zone (5–30 feet) we want to improve crown spacing for trees and remove ladder fuels up to 6 feet in height. Beyond that, in the extended area of your property (30-100+feet) we want to focus on managing low growing vegetation, spacing and thinning trees, and reducing other fuels that can carry fire toward your home.

It is incredibly important to remember two things when evaluating what needs to be cleaned up around your property. First, propane tanks and other flammable out buildings. Treat these items as their own centers of defensible space and have them evaluated for hazards. Second, remember that in the case of emergency, your driveway and home absolutely need to be accessible for emergency vehicles.
